Dr. Svynarenko discusses war in Ukraine

Dr. Anton Svynarenko, a visiting assistant professor of Russian in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literature is from Kharkiv, Ukraine, a city left heavily damaged by the Russian invasion. He says, having the support of faculty, staff and students during this very difficult time has been encouraging. Read more in "Thinking of Home".

Two International Studies faculty members participated in the South Alabama Indian Music Ensemble spring concert, held on May 8th at the Gulf Coast Hindu Society Temple.

Two IS majors inducted into Jaguar Senior Medallion Society

Abbey Montgomery and Grace Sekaya were two of seventeen graduating seniors inducted into the inaugural class of the Jaguar Senior Medallion Society for outstanding academic and leadership achievements and community engagement.

This year we inducted eight IS majors into Sigma Iota Rho, the International Studies Honor Society. It was wonderful to gather in person and celebrate our students' accomplishments!

Rachel Burdine, IS graduate

After graduating from the University of South Alabama, Rachel Burdine joined the Peace Corp and traveled to Cameroon. Today she works for World Relief as a program officer supporting the organization’s network of offices resettling refugees.

Rebecca Culberson wins Gilman Scholarship

Rebecca Culberson, a senior international studies major at South Alabama, is the recipient of the 2021 Gilman Scholarship and will receive a $4000 stipend for travel.

Students Interested in Chinese Culture hosted a Gongfu Tea Ceremony Demonstration, presented by Dr. Kevin Tsai.

Two IS majors elected to offices in student government

The Student Government Association officers at the University of South Alabama have been elected for the 2021-22 academic year. Grace Sekaya, a junior majoring in international studies and pre-med, was elected SGA president. Hope Bae, a junior majoring in international studies, was elected vice president.
